FACTS AND FIGURES
Gran Canaria is the third largest island in the Canaries. The 'Gran' in the name does not mean 'Grand' as in 'large' but 'Great' as in 'best'. The 'best' island in the Canaries is a matter of individual opinion, and you must decide your own favourite.
The surface area of Gran Canaria is 1,560 square kilometres (602 square miles). It is rounded in shape, with a diamter of approximately 50 kilometres (31 miles).
The population is approximately 800,000, the second largest after Ternerife. The capital city of Gran Canaria is Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and has the distinction of being the largest city in the Canaries.
The airport is worth a mention. Formerly known as Gando Airport, but now referred to as Las Palmas Airport, it is the busiest in the Canaries and is an alternative landing site for the Space Shuttle. It also controls all air traffic in the Canaries.
